Welcome to Barbara's Angels!

The purpose of this site is simple: to educate and integrate girls of my generation about and into politics, women’s issues, and feminism. My site is filled with profiles, interviews, and articles of first, second, and third wave feminists and women’s rights activists.  These women of the generations before me advocated, fought, and ultimately got a lot of what they wanted.  But there are still things worth advocating for, and that’s where my generation comes in. We are the new wave, the fourth wave, and we have been fully underrepresented.  I came up with the idea for this site when I was fourteen and noticed that girls my age were afraid of the word feminist.

What is a feminist? My site will explore and shed light on this suddenly “taboo” term. The girls I know are feminists, they just don’t realize it.  Many of them follow politics and believe in equal rights for women.  Many of them hear stories of the women I interview on my site and are in awe of their advocacy and incredible abilities to use their voices.  I have a bag from feministing.com which I wear everyday.  When I wear it, the same girls who agree with me about underrepresentation of women in politics, and discuss important global matters every day, ask me, “Why are you wearing that?” I wear the bag because I know I am a feminist, and even if I didn’t like the term, I would still like what it stood for.  The only way women will ever be equally represented in politics, the only way the ERA will ever be passed, the only way Madam President will step into office is if my generation steps it up, gets involved, and starts advocating early. We can all relate to the stories of Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, and Gloria Steinem, we just need to read the stories first. That’s what my site is here to do: present the stories, so girls of my generation can make their own stories someday.
